We define ourselves often from the Other.

This is probably the most interesting to me, especially where feminism is concerned. See my latest thread on Butler.

I read about 20 to 40 pages then might move to another and that is how I systematically go through so much.

I have to say, that’s how I usually read books too. This may or may not be a good idea, but I find that the books I read are interdisciplinary anyway – each writer is influenced and comments on the other writer I am reading, so this is probably productive in that way.

It’s not like reading Plato for example, where everything you need to understand is sort of ‘there’ in the text, although this is in dispute with writers like Derrida. But for the basics, Plato can be understood by simply knowing the divided line and recollection.

Yeah, it seemed a kind of unrelated thing to be in the article for the word supernatural in the first place.

Indeed, Idols can be human too.

Tangential discovery on the internet is a common occurance, well it used to be until I became more disciplined.

I have started a beginners zone where members can create threads that explain specific philosophical concepts, a quiz and guess thread might be a good idea when the forum becomes more busy, but I don’t think I could squeeze it in at present as I am trying to read about 5 books!

That reminds me, I have to have a look at Plato’s Cratylus on Naming.

I will check out those etymologies.

Just so you know, there is a fast quote button in mobile mode, the small star under each post, or if you are in desktop view, the small quote button with no text, allows you to highlight specific text in a post and then if you press that button, it will paste that text ina quote in the fast reply.

You experience a number showing on a device then you experience the idea that it is different now.

For sure, there is only ‘now’, strictly speaking, but our life is centered around our impending demise.

It’s ironic, because we had to pay £4 each to see Karl Marx, the leader of a movement against capitalism and enclosure.
